Nathan Rimmington picked up his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket as Western Australia kept Victoria in check despite Rob Quiney's 83 in Perth. At stumps on the first day, Victoria were 8 for 261 with Peter Siddle on 31 and Jayde Herrick on 8.

Fresh from being named the Domestic Player of the Year at Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne, Quiney continued his excellent summer with a fighting innings while the rest of Victoria's top order struggled. Rimmington and Michael Hogan picked up early wickets to leave Victoria at 3 for 56 before Quiney and Peter Handscomb (34) steadied the Bushrangers.

Glenn Maxwell also chipped in with 43 for Victoria but Rimmington ran through the lower order to end up with a career-best 5 for 46. Western Australia's acting captain Adam Voges had sent the Bushrangers in to bat in what is a must-win game for Victoria if they are to make the Sheffield Shield final.
